The IAU's Minor Planet Center has a frequently updated webpage entitled List Of Centaurs and Scattered-Disk Objects. Centaurs are grouped with the SDO's because the definitions of the two types of bodies overlap a bit, and some Centaurs may have once been SDO's. As I write this (25 Feb 2017), there are 692 bodies on the list. Of these, 157 have orbits sufficiently observed to be given minor planet numbers, and 21 have been officially named. Of these 21, 17 are Centaurs, and the others are outer bodies Eris, Sedna, Typhon and Ceto.

One of the numbered bodies that yet to be named is #308933 (previously classified 2006 SQ372). Discovered on September 27, 2006 at 20 Aqu 14 R (shortly after its perihelion on July 29), it takes 20,257 years to make one circle around the Sun. (See the Minor Planet Center's page on 308933. At perihelion it is 24.155 AU from the Sun, but at aphelion it is1570 AU! This is more extreme than Sedna (with an orbital period of 11,400 years). One astronomer wrote that it "may be the first known visitor to the planetary neighbourhood that still makes return trips home to the remote Oort Cloud."

308933 made a its closest approach to the Earth on August 18, 2007.

The eccentricity is amazing, 0.9675026, but even more amazing is that when near perihelion it crosses the orbit of Neptune (as does Pluto.) While the Minor Planet Center has not officially listed it as a Centaur, the Deep Ecliptic Survey (a Kuiper belt research group at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory) has classified it one. Some astronomers speculate that it may be a comet, but Michael Brown is one of the astronomers who think "it may have formed from debris just beyond Neptune [in the Kuiper belt] and been 'kicked' into its distant orbit by a planet like Neptune or Uranus".

Some astronomers have put this body in a category called Extended Centaurs. These are defined as Centaurs which, due to gravitational influence from Jupiter, have been scattered/ejected to beyond the orbit of Neptune, as well as objects scattered inward from the Oort cloud that cross the orbit(s) of the giant planet(s). There are eight other bodies in this category, including two which have been given numbers:
  • (336756) 2010 NV1, with an orbit of 5593.91 years. It has a perihelion of 9.4034 AU, and an aphelion of 620.83 AU.
  • (418993) 2009 MS9, with an orbit of 6481.05 years. It has a perihelion of 11.002 AU, and an aphelion of 696 AU.
Saturn's distance from the Sun ranges between 9.024 and 10.086 AU, which means both of these bodies cross the orbits of Pluto, Neptune and Uranus; 418993 gets almost to Saturn's, and 336756 can actually cross Saturn's orbit too.

Back to 308933. Its' inclination to the ecliptic is 19.49761.

For those who follow the Sabian Symbols, the symbol for its discovery degree is "A DISAPPOINTED AND DISILLUSIONED WOMAN COURAGEOUSLY FACES A SEEMINGLY EMPTY LIFE."

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

The period from late 1983 through 1984 was one of the most eventful of my life, and it was during this time that 308933 was conjunct my 9th house Moon. If this transit was related to any of these events, they should have some connection with Lunar themes (such as home, family, security, need to belong, an important woman in my life, maternal instincts, nurturing), as well as 9th house themes (religion, philosophy, beliefs, search for meaning, self-improvement, rituals, publishing, long distance travel, legal matters). Some of these events:
  • My astrological contacts grew with the meeting of many notable astrologers, including Robert Hand, Jim Lewis, Charles Jayne and Barbara Watters
  • I was asked to perform wedding ceremonies for two couples
  • I was told by my boss that I had become indispensable to the company I worked for
  • I began a second, part time job counseling people who were in danger of losing their homes, or who were already homeless
  • An article I had published a few years earlier was republished by the magazine as a 'notable reprint'
  • I was baptized in the church I was attending
  • My wife notified me that she was filing for divorce
  • I began organizing information for my book on Chiron, which I began writing while the body was separating but still in orb
  • My daughter came home from public school with a letter saying she had tested in the 99th percentile for language abilities
  • I was asked to speak to a group in Canada, the first time I had ever travelled outside of the USA to share knowledge

EPHEMERIS

Currently we can't get an accurate ephemeris of 308933 back before about 1583, but with an orbit this huge, it must stay in some signs for centuries. Here I include an annual ephemeris for 1583-2099, 0 hr GMT. It is intriguing that at the beginning of this table, it's annual motion can be measured in seconds, but as it approaches perihelion it advances almost 3 degrees a year:
